This course discusses what motivates donors, their thought process in deciding which organizations they will support, and ways you can have a meaningful conversation with your constituents about supporting your organization. The course also covers best practices on marketing your planned giving and trust services program, how to hold an estate planning seminar, and how you can keep your donor pipeline full, creating a steady stream of planned gifts that impact the mission of your organization.
The purpose of this course is to help you create a planned giving marketing plan that will help generate interest among your constituents. The course is worth 4 PGTS CPE Credits.
To complete the course and receive your CPE Certificate, you must achieve a 100% score on the quiz for each lesson and 75% score on all learning activities. Quiz questions are based on the lesson’s video presentation(s) and PowerPoint slides. Each quiz consists of 10 questions randomly selected from a bank of 20 questions. If a lesson has a learning activity you will submit your work in the form of a quiz. By submitting your work you will receive a score of 50%. Once you have achieved 100% on the course quizzes and 50% on all the Learning activities, a notification will automatically be sent to the course administrators who will review your learning activity submissions and adjust your grade accordingly. If after reviewing your learning activity submissions the administrators increase your score to 75% or higher your completion date for the course will be effective the day the notification was automatically generated.

There is no time limit on this course. However, to get PGTS CPE Credit for the current calendar year you must achieve 100% on all course quizzes and 50% on all learning activities on or before December 31. You may continue to access the course after successfully completing it.
You will learn how to have a conversation with your constituents about planned giving in a way that is meaningful to them, as well as learn how to overcome your constituent’s natural reluctance to talk about death and your possible reluctance to bring up the topic of charitable donations.
You will learn several ways you can let your constituents know about the benefits of planned giving, how the donor can impact your organization, and some of the tax benefits that are available through planned giving.
You will learn some techniques on how to plan, market, and conduct a seminar, as well as follow up in a way that will help your donors and your organization.
You will learn the activities necessary to build relationships with your constituents that will lead to planned gifts and support for your organization.
Dennis Carlson has been serving the Seventh-day Adventist church since 1977, first as an Adventist Book Center manager, and then as a Trust Officer and Director of the Planned Giving and Trust Services Ministry, as well as the Secretary of the Western Washington Corporation of Seventh-day Adventists. He is currently serving as the Director of Planned Giving and Trust Services for the General Conference/North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists.
Dennis holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in accounting from Southwestern Adventist University (SWAU) and a Masters of Business Administration in Personal Financial Planning from City University of Seattle.
His wife, Alma, also with a degree in accounting from SWAU, is an accountant most recently employed by the treasury department of the Washington Conference. His daughter, Criss, is studying physical therapy at Loma Linda University.
Dennis enjoys walking, backpacking, biking, rollerblading, and canoeing. On a daily basis, he enjoys reading and studying scripture and the writings of Ellen White.
Scot Coppock is the Associate Director of Planned Giving and Trust Services at the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and he is responsible for providing training and consultation services for the Planned Giving and Trust Services Personnel within the North American Division. He is a Certified Specialist in Planned Giving (CSPG), has completed the Original Canadian Gift Planning Course presented by the Canadian Association of Gift Planners, and holds the North American Division Planned Giving & Trust Services Certification.
Prior to working at the General Conference Scot was the Director of Leadership Giving at Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska where he enjoyed working with alumni and friends of the college, helping them support the mission of the college through current and deferred gifts. Before working at Union College Scot was a Financial Representative with the John Hancock Financial Network, and before that he was a Branch Manager with American General Financial Services.
Scot served with honor as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army before leaving the military to spend more time with his family. Scot and his wife Manuela, whom he met while stationed in Germany, have three adorable, energetic children who enjoy life and love to explore God's creation.
